About the work

contrasted moments unfolds in two distinct sections, exploring contrasting relationships between piccolo, clarinet, percussion, and violin. The opening focuses on the violin and clarinet in a raucous dialogue, their gestures sharing similar trajectories while maintaining distinct instrumental identities.

As the work progresses, the violin and clarinet are absorbed into a rhythmic texture alongside the percussion, creating a precise ticking framework over which the piccolo sings, warbles, and drifts. The shifting roles of the four instruments create a continually changing balance between independence and collective gesture.

This work was created with support from the Government of Western Australia Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

The violin and clarinet move from chaotic dialogue into a rhythmic texture over which the piccolo sings and warbles.
