About the work

Born out of a long-distance collaborative relationship between Niamh Dell and Stephen de Filippo, Spectral Breathing Apparatus explores the amplification of liminal sounds produced by the oboe with the removal of the reed, bringing tiny squeaks and breath sounds to the fore.

The work considers how these unstable sounds, which exist without a definite pitch, can form novel textures and interact with the live electronic processing and fixed media. The performer traverses a series of sonic environments: some evoke a glitchy, chaotic energy, while others suggest a more natural space.

Breath is channelled both through and against the instrument. The oboe is consequently presented as an apparatus that simultaneously enhances and restricts the quality of the performer's breath.
